PSYKICK DANCEHALL

With Ben Knight I was part of the collaborative project Psykick Dancehall, which began as a label documenting the UK’s underground experimental music. Between 2004 and 2018 we also organised live events with performances by artists including Magik Markers, Limpe Fuchs, Es, Ignatz, Gang Gang Dance, Yeah You, Bridget Hayden, Arrington de Dionyso, Jack Rose, Widt, and Matana Roberts.

Psykick Dancehall eventually became a platform for more wide ranging explorations of sound and aural experience across media, on questions including the politics of listening; visual scores and concrete/sound poetry's meetings of meaning and materiality, of sound, image and bodies; the economics of underground music; and the relationships between recording technologies and the voice. From 2010-2017 we produced DANCEHALL, reflecting on such ideas in collaboration with artists, musicians and writers from different backgrounds, across publications, exhibitions and events. Contributors to DANCEHALL include Dylan Nyoukis, Charlotte Prodger, Corin Sworn, Lawrence Upton, Daniela Cascella, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Marie Thompson, Peter Manson, and Limpe Fuchs among many others.

At present we are developing new work about experimental and interdisciplinary publishing and distribution practices, and the possibilities they present for exploring sound.
