BREATHLESS
Radio broadcast, 30:00 minutes, 2019-2020
Co-commissioned by Radiophrenia and Kunstradio Radiokunst for Ö1, Austria.
A radiophonic work that trawls through voicemails to think about ‘dys-appearing’ bodies, that impose themselves at the moment of their dysfunction; about attempts to communicate across a void. A portrait of a condition on the verge of speech.
Since the broadcast I have been working on a text that pursues the themes raised in the work more expansively: reflecting on fathers and daughters, halted speech, and also ideas cast in a new light by recent events: breath, toxic environments, class and the politics of public health. Bodily and material perspectives provoke broader questions about the disparities of privilege and power shaping our subjective experience.
